Planned distance of 20km
July 15th
Yesterday we were lucky to be the only pilgrims to book into our albergue. Glad to have the place to ourselves.
Sadly Lexi did not feel well after completing Hospitales. We suspected sun stroke or dehydration, so we tried to assist as best we could. Fortunately she had recovered enough, by morning, to be able to walk to the hotel close to Embalse de Salime and stay over for another day to fully recover.
We on the other hand started our walk around 8:00. It was misty again and felt a tad colder that the previous day. Walking in our usual pace, some faster and slower we easily made it up mountain. On the way down the steep descent to Grandas de Salime we came across a route deviation, so we followed. We suspected it might have been a slightly shorter or more direct route, but it ended up taking us in an almost parallel then outward direction and eventually U-turned and reconnected with the ordinal route. This added a few kilometers to the days mileage. (We later found out it was an old sign from 2 years ago when fires raged here). Perhaps one good thing about the deviation, other than being longer, was the rate of descent. It was mostly more of a gradual descent, unlike the original route, which descends rather rapidly.
Once we passed the Embalse de Salime the heavens started rumbling again, with some intermittent spitting. We decided to make a dash (slightly faster than usual) to our destination, which was around 6km away, in case the rain really came down.
We had to make sure to get to the local bar/restaurant to have a meal before 16:00 as everything closes early on a Sunday and will not reopen until Monday. I had to try a few new foods, like the bean stew and their variation of oxtail. Most delish and worth a try.
Just as we were about to leave the restaurant after our late lunch the heavens opened up. Some of us took refuge at the bar next door for a drink and watch the last half of the soccer final. I am no sports fan, so I focused on updating the blog, while watching with half an eye. Everyone was happy that the power failure happened just after the match ended.
Now time to relax and prepare for tomorrow’s walk.
Fluit fluit, my storie is uit.
